What were your first few weeks actually like? Mostly shadowing people or little bits of your own work? I can read the job descriptions but still can’t picture how you get started when you don’t know anything yet
Only a few weeks into mine so can’t speak for the whole thing, but it’s been a mixture. I’ve sat with people while they explain a task, then tried a small part myself and had it checked. Nothing where I’m expected to just know what I’m doing. The harder bit for me has been working out who to ask when my manager’s busy. We’ve now got someone else I can go to as well, which has made it less awkward.
Is it mainly you learning on your own or are there other apprentices with you?
My cohort helped a lot with the being-new bit. Even when someone couldn’t answer the actual work question, it was reassuring that they were also trying to work out how everything worked. I’d ask whether you get time with the other apprentices, not just how many the company takes on. Those aren’t quite the same thing
Mostly with the team for the actual work, not sitting with the other apprentices all day. Worth asking at each place though because the setup won’t necessarily be the same.
Im a bit over a month into my apprenticeship so I can’t say too much however my first week was basically doing online training. I started by attending meetings, shadowing people. Coworkers know you are completely clueless, I get small jobs that someone sat down to explain to me, my field is also practical in a sense so I shadowed individuals and asked them questions about how things work, I slowly started getting more small jobs but you will ask a lot of questions about how it works and they know that. As you understand more you will also get more jobs so you will get more responsibilities
