Who are people putting down for references when they’re still working? I’ve got my weekend shop job, but asking my manager now feels a bit awkward when I don’t even know whether I’ll get anywhere with applications. I don’t want it to sound like I’m handing in my notice. Would you ask a tutor first or just explain what you’re applying for to your manager?
I’d check what the application actually asks for before choosing. If it needs someone from your current job, a tutor might not cover it. But I wouldn’t treat asking for a reference as giving notice either. You can explain you’re exploring apprenticeships and don’t have an offer or leaving date.

I’d ask before putting anyone’s details down personally. I checked with my tutor first so she wasn’t going to get an email out of nowhere, although I haven’t actually needed to use her as a referee yet
I honestly wouldn’t make it a massive thing unless they actually get to the point of contacting them. I’d probably put my manager down if that’s the best reference and then mention it to them once the application starts going somewhere. Depends what the form says obviously but I wouldn’t have a whole leaving conversation just because I’ve applied somewhere

yeah this is kinda what I was thinking. I dont mind telling them I’m applying, just feels dramatic bringing it up when I could get rejected at the first stage anyway lol
That’s fair. I’d just make sure you’re not putting someone’s details down if the form says they’ll be contacted straight away. Other than that I wouldn’t overthink it
